The Canopy Project

A modular, climate-responsive bus stop system inspired by nature and designed to grow with the neighbourhood

Master of Design Capstone Group Project at the University of Sydney, 2025

Schofields is changing fast – but the infrastructure isn’t keeping pace. As temperatures rise and population surges, public transport users are left exposed to the heat, with few places to gather, cool down, or connect. The Canopy Project reimagines the bus stop in Schofields, Western Sydney, as a living system—scalable, adaptable, and inspired by nature. Like a tree that is nurtured as it grows and eventually gives back, The Canopy Project’s three-tiered solution (Canopy, Sapling, Seedling) offers flexibility tailored to diverse site conditions, usage patterns, and community needs. Each variant is a modular structure that adapts to Schofields’ diverse needs and site conditions. The stops are rounded, using muted colours to reflect the natural environment. Key design elements – skylights, cooling systems, and vertical gardens – are integrated to balance form and function. Rooted in life-centred design and driven by principles of climate resilience, this project delivers bus stops that are cooler, safer, more inclusive and welcoming. Beyond providing shelter, The Canopy Project fosters community connection and creates a lasting sense of place—designed to grow with Schofields and give back to its people.

Canopy - An “anchor of the community”

The Canopy is a solar-powered hub designed to foster engagement, sustainability, and collaboration. It features amphitheatre seating, a bladeless cooling system, digital displays, and a micro-library and plant exchange program with Blacktown City Council. Partnering with local suppliers, The Canopy integrates a vertical native garden wall to reduce heat stress and enhance connection to nature

Sapling - A “mid-sized connecting structure”

The Sapling features straightforward seating, a bladeless cooling system, and is decorated with local artworks that strengthen community identity.

Seedling - A “compact, climate-smart shelter”

The Seedling features adjustable shade, designed specifically for areas with limited space. The rotation of the roof is operated by a push button that revolves the structure around the main B pole.
